Penny Candy Part I

So while shopping today I saw that on the discount rack of a local shop was an assortment of "Penny Candy" and "60s Groovy Candy" marked down to 97 cents from around $4.99. I'd been interested before, but this penny candy was until today a little too expensive for me and my pocket. But I couldn't resist a good sale, and I cracked open the bag to see what was in it. (The Groovy Candy can wait. I see Razzles, I must try them. Razzles. Right now.)

Now I don't have a clue what most of these are, and I haven't tried at least half of what I do recognize. They're more or less all that candy you get (or used to get) on Halloween that your parents would immediately filter out. Waxed paper, really odd looking little knobbly candy. The stuff that can easily be sketchy. The stuff you have no desire to try. But in the name of science, I'm going to try it all.

RAZZLES FIRST.

To be honest, entirely honest, the extent to which I really know Razzles is from 13 Going On 30. But I know "First It's Candy... Then It's Gum!" and that's enough to excite me. Bazooka and Dubble Bubble gum I am well acquainted with. They always hurt my jaw. But Razzles!

... They kind of look like drugs. I am mildly disappointed I didn't get Razzle Red!!! But I pop the yellow...? one and I can't really taste it. If it's orange, like I think it really is, it's more like a circular piece of chalk than it is candy. I prematurely started chewing trying to get to the "gum" part but it just crumbled. Like chalk. "Candy" spit out so far count: 1. I'm not trying the grape.

I actually think the remnants of the Razzles did turn to gum in my mouth because I can't get it out of my teeth. So I popped in some Dubble Bubble to try and suction it off. I also tried the Bazooka, which I was pleasantly surprised to find still have little comics in them! And a fortune.

"Fortune: Life is like Pizza - For both you need lots of dough."

Indeed, Bazooka Joe (and his GANG), that is true. You are so witty, I'm laughing right now. I really, honestly am.

And as expected, the gum loses taste at approximately the same time you finally manage to start chewing it. But at least now I don't taste any Razzles in my mouth. Ugh.

I was really excited about Razzles. The most excited, in fact. And the most disappointed.

Next Post: Moving on to the gummies and wax papered... "candy".
